Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
